Rotary members and friends spruce up Playfair Park on Rotary's EPIC Day of Service in Missoula May 16 joining the worldwide Rotary effort

Missoula Rotarians joined Rotary members around the world May 16 all conducting EPIC Day of Service projects on the same day. The Rotary Club of Missoula's EPIC Day of Service community service project was to brighten and enhance Playfair Park in Missoula.

Twenty-four volunteers pulled weeds, shoveled sand, laid down mulch and refreshed the playground at the park. Thanks to the Missoula Parks & Recreation Department for their support in this project.

OUR CLUB

Thanks to Rotary Club of Missoula, Hellgate High School freshman Bridger Goris, 15, of Missoula, will travel to Germany this fall as a Rotary Youth Exchange student. This exciting opportunity will allow him to attend school, live with host families, and experience daily life in another country while serving as a young ambassador for his community and Rotary.

Bridger has already had some different cultural experiences. He was born in Havana, Cuba, and his family then lived in Spain for seven years; thus, he is fluent in Spanish. Bridger has already visited 29 countries during his young life, but he wants to learn even more about different cultures.

Bridger shared with attendees at the District Conference in Helena last weekend that he enjoys music (he and Kathy discussed guitar and songs they like) and reading, among other activities. Bridger also plays the tuba and trumpet and is part of jazz band at Hellgate. What better American ambassador representing the Rotary Club of Missoula in Germany than a musician?

Rotary Youth Exchange is one of Rotary’s most meaningful investments in peace, leadership, and international understanding. Through the program, students gain confidence, independence, language skills, and a broader worldview. At the same time, host families, schools, and local communities benefit from the friendships and cultural exchange that grow from these experiences. Just ask anyone who was an exchange student or who hosted one.

As Bridger prepares for his year in Germany, we celebrate this important milestone and wish him every success on the journey ahead. He says he is learning as much German as he can prior to his departure. We look forward to hearing about his experiences and the many ways this exchange will deepen understanding, strengthen leadership, and reflect Rotary’s commitment to building goodwill across borders.

Thank you to Martha Ripley, Youth Exchange chair, for your Service Above Self, and to Cindy Fulks who has served this year as counselor for an exchange student.

UNITE FOR GOOD.

President Shari

America honored the heroes of our country on Monday. Soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country rest in graves all around the world.  We honor the fallen each year on Memorial Day. We remember them for their contributions to maintaining our freedom.

The Daily Missoulian pictured above was published in Missoula on “Monday Morning, November 11, 1918” announcing the end of the World War. Many of us had relatives who fought and died in ”The Great War" or “The World War” as it is called in the lede article, and what everyone called it until the world had to start numbering our wars. A statue honoring the doughboys of World War I stands in front of the Missoula County Courthouse.

Mary Moe agreed to pinch hit for Sargent-at-Arms Mike Schauf at last Wednesday's meeting. Mary used the big silver bucket to collect Happy Bucks donations, including some from grateful parents there to watch their kids on the youth panel. She's pictured above after counting the donations received, all of which will support club projects aiding local nonprofits. Thanks to everyone who shares your happiness each week with the club and the community!

Thanks to all the many Rotary Club of Missoula members, friends and colleagues who volunteered to help out with the Playfair Park project our club carried out on Saturday, May 16. The project, according to our Club EPIC Day Chair Phyllis Green, was coordinated with the Missoula Parks & Recreation Department.

Everyone worked hard weeding beds, shoveling sand underneath the swings, and spreading mulch. It was a glorious, EPIC day despite the cool weather and threatening clouds, which dropped a bit of moisture on everyone.

Special thanks to Martha Ripley for coordinating everyone's arrival, to Bill Schwanke for donating pizza, to Phyllis Green for donating beverages, and to Victoria Emmons for providing the water.

Yay! Another In Tune Missoula is now in the books! The event on April 23 at the ZACC marked the fourth year Rotary Club of Missoula has organized this benefit to raise funds for music education in Missoula County.

It’s too soon to know the final amount raised, but the goal of the In Tune team this year was to have an event that is fun, fun, fun and, thanks to the two bands who donated their talent to the cause — and a tireless Rotary In Tune Committee — without a doubt, we met that goal.

Beau Akimbo is an eight-piece funk/pop band with a killer horn section that plays high-energy, danceable tunes, and they definitely got folks on the dance floor during the first set.

In the second set, Missoula Mixtape, a seven-piece band featuring several of the same instrumentalists, kept people dancing with covers from the 1980s. They even had a “moonwalk” contest, in which Assistant Governor Dean Fiedler and Past President Andrew George did Rotary Club of Missoula proud.

Dean did his usual terrific job as emcee and Youth Director Mary Moe gave the traditional tribute to music education in order to emphasize the importance of Rotary’s In Tune project. She then invited the music educators in attendance to stand in front of the stage and receive our appreciation. Attendees joined in a rousing round of applause for them.

Out in the foyer, Club Secretary Bill Schwanke, President-Elect Lori Cummings, Immediate Past President Patti Schulte, and District Governor-Elect Kathy Schulte ran the operations needed to process admissions, the 50-50 raffle, and the silent auction purchases. Community Service Director Phyllis Green set up and monitored the silent auction with her trademark diligence.

Attendees were thrilled with the experience. An entire book club attended; if they read and discuss books with the energy and endurance they brought to the dance floor, the world of literature is in good hands.

Music educators were touched and delighted by the recognition they received. Everyone left with smiles on their faces, and one veteran attendee remarked, “Best one yet!”

Mary, who served as chair of In Tune Missoula for the fourth consecutive year, was delighted with the turnout and the joy so apparent at the venue.

“That wouldn’t have happened,” she said, “if we didn’t have such a great team. Even those who were not able to attend made significant contributions to the event. I particularly want to recognize Phyllis Green, who put in months preparing for the auction and was absolutely dogged in ensuring that every ‘i’ was dotted and ‘t’ crossed in the days leading up it.”

Thank you to the In Tune Committee, Rotarians, volunteers, sponsors, auction donors and bidders, musicians, caterers, and music teachers who supported the event, as well as the ZACC staff for allowing us to host the fundraiser in their lovely facility.
